Ms. Wang Ruixin is a postdoctoral researcher at Niigata University and a participant in the “ArCS III Young Researcher Overseas Dispatch Program.”
Ms. Wang conducted field research in Fairbanks, Alaska, from July 1 to August 1, focusing on black spruce (Picea mariana) forests in the Alaskan permafrost region. The purpose of the study was to investigate how environmental changes affect soils and vegetation in these ecosystems.
(Black spruce: A conifer species in the pine family native to cold regions of North America. Its Japanese name is “kurotōhi.”)
Supported by the ArCS III Overseas Research Program, I conducted a one-month field investigation in Fairbanks, Alaska, in July 2026. During the fieldwork, I surveyed vegetation under contrasting black spruce stand structures at UAF and PFRR and collected active-layer soil profile samples. The collected samples will be used to investigate the vertical dynamics of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus and their roles in microbial carbon mineralization within Arctic permafrost soils. Hokkaido University implements the “ArCS III Young Researcher Overseas Dispatch and Acceptance Program” as part of the ArCS III (Arctic Challenge for Sustainability III) project. The purpose of this program is to support the future development of Arctic-related research and operations conducted by young researchers, as well as to foster international human networks that will contribute to long-term advancement in the field.
