Hokkaido University Arctic Research Center organized a Summer Institute titled “Understanding the Changing Arctic and Its Global Interconnections” from July 1 to 4, 2025.

The objectives of the course were to develop a comprehensive understanding of the environmental changes occurring in the Arctic; to examine the frameworks, policies, and international agreements governing the region; and to explore how global phenomena intersect with Arctic issues and how international actors influence the development of the Arctic.

Lectures covered a wide range of topics, including Arctic biodiversity, Arctic marine ecosystems and remote observation, climate change and future environmental risks, Arctic geopolitics and international relations, Japan and the Arctic, China and the Arctic, the Arctic from the perspectives of international and Indigenous law, and sustainable economic development in the region.

In addition to the faculty members of the Arctic Research Center, lectures were also delivered by Professor Kamrul Hossain (University of Lapland) and Associate Professor Martin Kossa (Nord University).
