On 30 September 2026, Hokkaido University Arctic Research Center hosted the workshop “Conducting Research in and on the Arctic” for students and early-career researchers interested in Arctic research. The program featured presentations by Pavel Tkach, Medy Dervovic, and Marco Volpe from the University of Lapland, and Evgeny Podolskiy and Juha Saunavaara from Hokkaido University Arctic Research Center.
Drawing on their own research experiences, the speakers reflected on the challenges, mistakes, successes, and lessons encountered in Arctic research and shared practical advice with students and early-career researchers. Recurring themes included balancing research with multiple projects, securing funding, working across disciplines, engaging policymakers and other stakeholders, building international networks, and making strategic choices about research and mobility opportunities. The speakers also emphasized finding one’s research niche, remaining flexible, and knowing when to decline opportunities.
The discussion highlighted practical aspects of Arctic research, including connecting research with regional and municipal decision-making, careful planning and safety during fieldwork, collaboration across disciplines, and meaningful engagement with local communities. Particular attention was given to building trust, communicating research findings back to communities, and recognizing the limits of an outsider’s perspective. The talks were followed by a general discussion and exchange with participants.
