A research paper led by Center Director Shin Sugiyama was published online in the Journal of Glaciology in June, followed by an official press release from Hokkaido University.
In 2012, the research team launched long‑term glacier monitoring in Qaanaaq, northwestern Greenland, in order to accurately assess the impacts of climate change. Their observations revealed that between 2012 and 2025, the glacier lost 5.4 meters of ice thickness. The study further shows that, based on the relationship between ice loss and meteorological data, rising air temperatures are expected to accelerate the rate of ice loss in the future.
These findings provide crucial insight for understanding how climate change affects glaciers, including its implications for river flooding and other related hazards.
