Hokkaido University under the Arctic Challenge for Sustainability III Project (ArCS III) conducts “Overseas Fellowship Program” to promote Arctic research by young researchers. This fiscal year, we support seven young researchers the Arctic research.
Mr. Shotaro Muraoka of Kitami Institute of Technology conducting observations in the Arctic Ocean by CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent has sent the message as stated below.
“The Arctic observation ‘JOIS 2025’ has begun on September 18. Currently, we are gradually heading north along a pre-determined route.I would like to introduce two activities conducted by the Japanese sea ice observation team: visual sea ice observation and ice thickness measurement using a shipborne EM. In visual sea ice observation, we mainly identify the type and size of sea ice and whether it is covered with snow by visual inspection. In addition, we record the weather, the ship’s position, and its speed. On the other hand, in ice thickness measurement using shipborne EM, EM sensors are suspended from the ship to automatically measure ice thickness using electromagnetic induction and laser technology. Regarding visual observation, I feel that I am gradually getting used to identifying different ice types. I will continue to work hard in the upcoming observations.”
