The 106th Marine Education Forum in Hokkaido held in Sapporo.

The Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE) holds marine education forums throughout Japan with the aim of fostering a deeper understanding of the ocean. The 106th Marine Education Forum, organised by the Marine Education Promotion Committee of JASNAOE and supported by the Arctic Research Centre of Hokkaido University and other organisations, took place on 6 December 2025 in the small auditorium of the Hokkaido University Academic Exchange Hall. The theme of the forum was ‘The Sea Opens the Future of Hokkaido’ and it consisted of two parts: Part 1 comprised lectures by experts, while Part 2 featured research presentations by high school students.

In Part 1, Dr. Mitsunari Hirasawa of the Cold Regions Air and Sea Ports Engineering Research Centre gave a lecture entitled ‘The Role of Sea Ports for Hokkaido: Past, Present and Future’, and Associate Professor Dr. Evgeny Podolskiy of the Arctic Research Centre at Hokkaido University gave a lecture entitled ‘Listening to the Arctic: Acoustic Monitoring of Animals and Their Environment in Greenland’. Eight high schools in Hokkaido participated in the second part and gave eight presentations: Hokkaido Otaru Fisheries High School, Sapporo Asahigaoka Senior High School, Sapporo Kaisei Secondary School, Hokkaido Sapporo Keisei High School, Hokkaido Hakodate Fisheries High School, and Ritsumeikan Keisho High School. There were very active question-and-answer sessions throughout.
