Snow and Ice Field Course in MOSHIRI

Outline

We will conduct field observations of snowfall, snow accumulation, and freezing weather in Moshiri, one of Hokkaido’s coldest and snowiest regions. This program is a core subject in the Hokkaido University Antarctic Studies curriculum. However, starting in 2025, in collaboration with the ArCS-3, graduate students and practitioners from outside Hokkaido University will also be able to participate.

This program allows participants to experience field observations and data analysis in the harsh winter and acquire knowledge and observation techniques related to snow accumulation, hydrology, meteorology, and forest environments. Experience nearly two meters of snow and temperatures below -20°C and learn about natural phenomena unique to Hokkaido.
