A workshop was organized as a part of the EU Political Counsellors’ visit to Hokkaido

The Hokkaido University Arctic Research Center (HU ARC) and the Hokkaido University Arctic Initiative for Future Earth and SDGs (HAI-FES) organized a workshop on October 3, 2024, at the FMI: Global Research Center for Food & Medical Innovation, focusing Japan’s interactions with the Arctic and the relations between Hokkaido and Russia.

This event was attended by political counsellors from various EU member state embassies in Tokyo and representatives from the Delegation of the European Union to Japan. Representatives from HU ARC and the Okhotsk Sea Ice Museum of Hokkaido delivered presentations on Arctic Research at Hokkaido University, Japan’s engagement with the Arctic, Arctic governance and security from the Japanese perspective, recent developments surrounding the Northern Sea Route, and Hokkaido’s relations with the Russian Far East. The presentations were followed by a lively discussion and questions from the visiting diplomats.
