Hokkaido University under the Project “Arctic Challenge for Sustainability (ArCS III)” supports the development of young resources in Arctic research.

Shotaro Muraoka of Graduate School of Engineering of Kitami Institute of Technology is currently aboard the icebreaker Louis S. Saint-Laurent and conducting observations of sea ice thickness in the Arctic.

With only a few days left of their research schedule in the Arctic, they have concluded their ice observations. Here, Mr. Muraoka shares with us the state of the ice with photos and a message.

“It was my first time standing on Arctic ice! As we landed on the areas with thick sea ice, it felt as if the sea ice totally continued forever like land. At the site where the Japanese team drilled, the sea ice was as thick as 240cm in some places!”
