ArCS-3 OSHOROMARU Arctic Ocean Boarding Practice

The aim is to train the next generation of researchers who will lead future Arctic research and to expand their intuition towards Arctic research through Arctic Ocean voyages on the Oshoro Maru, a training ship attached to the Faculty of Fisheries of Hokkaido University. So far, the programme has been conducted for graduate students through the Arctic Research Promotion Project (ArCS, 2015-2019) and the Arctic Research Acceleration Project (ArCS II, 2020-2024), and in June-August 2023, the programme was expanded to include undergraduate students from all over Japan, and open training in the Arctic Ocean was conducted. In 2026, a combination of two public training programmes is planned. (i) pre-boarding training (off the coast of Hokkaido and Tohoku, Feb~Mar 2026); and (ii) Arctic Ocean boarding training (July~August 2026).
