A special seminar hosted by the Hokkaido University Arctic Research Center, featuring Marc Lanteigne (林晏), Professor at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway and adjunct lecturer at the University of Greenland in Nuuk, was held at JRL on May 15, 2025, from 14:00 to 15:30.
The title of Marc’s presentation was “After the Thaw: Great Powers and Arctic Security.”
In his talk, Marc explored emerging geopolitical forces that are challenging established regimes and norms in the Arctic. He addressed the so-called “return” of security concerns in the region, alongside rising competition over resources, energy, and strategic access — with Greenland highlighted as a key case study of these mounting pressures. The presentation also examined current issues related to hybrid warfare and the growing relevance of “grey zone” tactics.
