Director of Arctic Research Center, Shin Sugiyama, has been awarded the Julina and Johanes Weertman Medal by the European Geosciences Union (EGU).
EGU is a global society for geosciences, and this award is given to individuals in recognition of their outstanding scientific contributions
to the study of the cryosphere on Earth or elsewhere in the solar system. The medal in 2025 is awarded to Shin Sugiyama for his
outstanding work in the field of glacier dynamics and ice-water interactions, including seminal contributions to our understanding of
lake-calving glaciers and ice-dammed lake outbursts. The award committee also recognizes his collaboration with local communities in Greenland, his educational activities including field courses both in Japan and overseas, and his role in the international research communities. The ceremony and medal lecture were held on April 29, 2025, at the EGU Annual Meeting in Vienna, Austria.
