The 98th Marine Education Forum in Hokkaido held in Sapporo

The Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE) holds marine education forums throughout Japan with the aim of deepening understanding of the ocean. The 98th Marine Education Forum (organized by the Marine Education Promotion Committee of the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers and co-organized by the Arctic Research Centre of Hokkaido University) was held on 15 December 2024 in the small auditorium of the Hokkaido University Academic Exchange Hall. The theme of the forum was ‘The Sea Opens the Future of Hokkaido’ and consisted of two parts: Part 1: lectures by experts and Part 2: research presentations by high school students.In Part 1, Professor Daisuke Kitazawa of the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Industrial Science gave a lecture on ‘Towards the development of next-generation aquaculture in harmony with the fishing industry’, and Kosuke Takahashi of Green Power Investment Co Ltd gave a lecture on ‘Towards the expansion of domestic renewable energy development – the importance of Hokkaido and offshore wind power’. In the second part, eight schools in Hokkaido (Hokkaido Akkeshi-Shoyo High School, Hokkaido Otaru Fisheries High School, Sapporo Asahigaoka Senior High School, Sapporo Kaisei Secondary School, Hokkaido Sapporo Keisei High School, Sapporo Nihon University High School, Hokkaido Hakodate Fisheries High School and Ritsumeikan Keisho High School) participated and gave 11 presentations. Very active question and answer sessions were held throughout.
