Title: “Arctic research/studies as area studies”
Abstract:
“This lecture will analyze the relationship between Arctic research/studies and the broader academic field known as area studies. While Arctic studies share many elements with area studies (such as Japanese studies, East Asian studies, European studies, Latin American studies, etc.), the significant role played by natural scientists and the focus on issues like environmental change and global warming distinguish Arctic studies from disciplines that traditionally emphasize the cultural, historical, political, and social aspects of specific geographic regions or countries. After briefly introducing the history of area studies and Arctic studies, this lecture will explore the role of Arctic studies within the broader domain of area studies, discuss the relationship between Arctic studies and other academic disciplines, and consider the involvement of non-Arctic actors in Arctic studies.”
