The Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE) holds marine education forums throughout Japan with the aim of deepening understanding of the ocean. The Marine Education Forum in Hokkaido was held in Hakodate on 9 December 2023 under the theme ‘The Sea, the Environment and Hokkaido’, with the Arctic Research Centre participating as a co-organizer. In the first part of the forum, special lectures were given by Professor Emeritus Saito, former Director of the Arctic Research Center, and Dr. Ikenoue, Deputy Chief Scientist of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology. In the second part, five oral presentations and 15 poster presentations were made by high school students from six schools in Hakodate, Sapporo and Otaru, and active question and answer sessions were held.
