While Arctic studies share many elements with area studies (such as Japanese studies, East Asian studies, European studies, Latin American studies, etc.), the significant role played by natural scientists and the focus on issues like\u00a0environmental change and global warming distinguish Arctic studies from disciplines that traditionally emphasize the cultural, historical, political, and social aspects of specific geographic regions or countries.
