His research has focused on analyzing the composition and characteristics of aerosol particles found in Greenland ice cores to identify their sources and transport pathways. From the evening of my arrival through the morning of the first day of the conference, temperatures dropped below freezing, and snow was falling. Although Sapporo, Hokkaido, where I live, is one of the coldest cities in Japan, I was surprised to find that Banff was even colder in mid-October.

The conference began on Sunday, October 11, at the Banff Centre, surrounded by the magnificent Rocky Mountains. Although I was initially overwhelmed by the lively discussions among international researchers, I actively exchanged ideas with other early-career researchers during a networking session held on the first day, seeking to deepen my scientific knowledge and improve my English communication skills.

View of the main conference hall -Photo by Kotaro Matsuzaki(Graduate School of Environmental Science, Hokkaido Univ.)

On the morning of Tuesday, October 13, the third day of the conference, I gave a poster presentation entitled “Detection of Mixed Particles of Black Carbon and Ammonium Sulfate in a High-Accumulation Dome Ice Core, Southeast Greenland.”

Explaining My Research to International Researchers -Photo by Sumito Matoba(Institute of Low Temperature Science, Hokkaido Univ.)

During my presentation, I received many questions, particularly about the sublimation method used in my research. Traditionally, melting methods have been widely used to analyze insoluble particles in ice cores. In contrast, the sublimation method allows both insoluble particles and water-soluble particles, which would dissolve during melting, to be collected and analyzed in their solid state. Although I found it challenging to explain the advantages of this method and the novelty of my research in English, many researchers showed interest in my work, leading to valuable discussions.

Commemorative Photo with My Research Poster -Photo by Hikaru Kondo(Graduate School of Environmental Science, Hokkaido Univ.)

Through my participation in this conference, I once again realized how difficult it is to communicate scientific research clearly. Even when presenting in Japanese at domestic conferences, I find it challenging to explain my research in an understandable way, and I found it even more difficult in English. Nevertheless, I made an effort to engage with the audience by observing their reactions and occasionally asking if they had any questions. This experience provided valuable lessons that will help me improve my future research presentations.

The conference is still ongoing, and I hope to make the most of the remaining days by strengthening connections with ice-core researchers from Japan and abroad, gaining new scientific insights, and applying what I learn to advance my research.

At Hokkaido University, the ArCS III Arctic Challenge for Sustainability III project operates the Young Researcher Overseas Dispatch and Hosting Program.
