The purpose of the study was to investigate how environmental changes affect soils and vegetation in these ecosystems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>(<em>Black spruce: A conifer species in the pine family native to cold regions of North America. Its Japanese name is \u201ckurot\u014dhi.\u201d<\/em>)<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span>Supported by the\u00a0<\/span><strong>ArCS III Overseas Research Program<\/strong><span>, I conducted a one-month field investigation in Fairbanks, Alaska, in July 2026. During the fieldwork, I surveyed vegetation under contrasting black spruce stand structures at UAF and PFRR and collected active-layer soil profile samples. The collected samples will be used to investigate the vertical dynamics of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus and their roles in microbial carbon mineralization within Arctic permafrost soils. I sincerely appreciate the support of the ArCS III Program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc.hokudai.ac.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Picture1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arc.hokudai.ac.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Picture1-760x570.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"570\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11247\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Hokkaido University implements the \u201cArCS III Young Researcher Overseas Dispatch and Acceptance Program\u201d as part of the ArCS III (Arctic Challenge for Sustainability III) project.
